This collection shows students of English and applied linguistics
ways in which language and literary study can be integrated. By
drawing on a wide range of texts by mainly British and American
writers, from a variety of different periods, the contributors show
how discourse stylistics can provide models for the systematic
description of, for example, dialogue in fiction; language of drama
and balladic poetry; speech presentation; the interactive
properties of metre; the communicative context of author/reader.
Among the texts examined are novels, poetry and drama by major
twentieth-century writers such as Joyce, Auden, Pinter and Hopkins,
as well as examples from Shakespeare, Donne and Milton. Each
chapter has a wide range of exercises for practical analysis, an
extensive glossary and a comprehensive bibliography with
suggestions for further reading. The book will be particularly
useful to undergraduate students of English and applied linguistics
and advanced students of modern languages or English as a foreign
language.
Since opening in 2003, the revolutionary urban design of Federation
Square, Melbourne has captured the imagination of visitors and
residents alike. At the heart of its appeal is Nearamnew, a 7500
square metre ground pattern woven into the fabric of the square's
main plaza. In collaboration, artist Paul Carter and Lab
architecture studio have produced a complex poetic sculpture that
is public artwork at its best. As pedestrians cross its patterned
surface, they are invited to participate, to stop and read the
text, to feel the texture embedded within, to play hopscotch in
""The Child's Vision"", to experience the work from within.
""Mythform"" tells the story of how this extraordinary work was
conceived, developed and installed. A selection from some of the
hundreds of studies, drawings and plans made over the four years of
design and construction allow the reader 'behind the scenes' into
the making of this immense project; the detailed photographs reveal
the beauty of the design at all stages of its progress and Paul
Carter's commentary provides insights into how the 'concrete poems'
commemorate the extraordinary wealth of myth, legend and dream
associated with Federation Square.

Chartered in 1869, Southern Illinois University has been a stalwart
presence on the southern Illinois landscape for a century and a
half. This book celebrates the 150th anniversary of the
university's founding by exploring in depth its history since 1969,
when the last book to celebrate a major anniversary was published.
Chapters reflect on SIU's successful athletics program, the various
colleges and departments within the university, the diverse
holdings and collections of the library, the unique innovative
research enterprises, and special programs such as the Paul Simon
Public Policy Institute and Touch of Nature Environmental Center.
Although SIU may be a typical large public university in many ways,
its unique location, history, and culture have made it a distinct
institution of higher education. Located close to the Shawnee
National Forest and Giant City State Park, the landscape is an
indelible part of SIU, contributing to both the beauty of the
university grounds and the campus culture. The university's
sesquicentennial provides a wonderful opportunity to revisit all
that makes SIU amazing. Illustrated with 306 photographs of theater
and music performances, art, sports, past and present students,
faculty, staff, administration, politicians, community members,
successful alums, distinguished visitors, and patrons of the
university buildings, and landscapes, Southern Illinois University
at 150 Years captures the university's story in all its vivid
color.
"This important Handbook of Entrepreneurial Dynamics reports on the
Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED), the most
comprehensive scientifically representative study to date of
nascent entrepreneurs. The book is unique because the study
identified individuals in the process of creating new businesses to
understand how, at its very source, people move from considering
the option of starting a new business to its actual founding. This
has never been done before in the history of entrepreneurship
research... I cannot recommend this book more strongly to
entrepreneurship scholars and those interested in where
entrepreneurs come from and how they move from their initial idea
to new venture founding." --Claudia Bird Schoonhoven, University of
California, Irvine "This Handbook makes a terrific contribution to
understanding entrepreneurship and new business creation. Its 38
chapters report major findings from the Panel Study of
Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED), an unprecedented research program
involving more than a hundred researchers from 10 countries. This
Handbook is 'must reading' for anyone interested in
entrepreneurship research." --Andrew H. Van de Ven, Carlson School
of Management, University of Minnesota Entrepreneurial activity
provides profound positive benefits across an important set of
measures of social and economic well-being, much of it concentrated
in new economic sectors such as information technology. Yet, even
though entrepreneurship has been shown to provide many benefits, it
is surprising that there has not been a systematic study of the
entrepreneurial process. The Handbook of Entrepreneurial Dynamics:
The Process of Business Creation fills this gap by offering
theories, ideas, and measures that can be used to explore and
understand the factors that encompass and influence the creation of
new businesses. The chapters in the handbook provide the rationale
for questionnaires used in the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial
Dynamics (PSED). The PSED is a research program that was initiated
to provide systematic, reliable, and generalizable data on
important features of the new business creation process. The PSED
includes information on the proportion and characteristics of the
adult population involved in efforts to start businesses, the
activities and characteristics that comprise the nature of the
business start-up process, and the proportion and characteristics
of those business start-up efforts that actually become new
businesses. The handbook also describes the PSED data collection
process; provides documentation of the interview schedules,
codebooks, data preparation and weighting scheme; as well as offers
examples of how analyses of PSED data might be conducted. The
authors identify specific measures that can be used to
operationalize theory as well as provide evidence from the PSED
data sets on these measures' reliability and validity. The Handbook
of Entrepreneurial Dynamics is ideal for a sizeable audience,
including graduate students, academics, and librarians in schools
of business and management who need a comprehensive reference on
business creation. In addition, researchers and policy makers at
the federal, state, and local level will find this an invaluable
reference covering all of the factors involved in new venture
formation. Key Features: * Considers categories of data not
available prior to the PSED * Includes a comprehensive overview of
theories about new business formation * Provides demographics of
nascent entrepreneurs * Analyzes the cognitive characteristics of
nascent entrepreneurs * Explores all of the processes of new
business formation
